Rapid Share

What is RapidShare?

RapidShare is a filesharing service that offers free and paid services.  RapidShare is also one of the most popular file hosting services on the Internet, ranking as the 16th most frequented web site according to Alexa.  The web site is hosted in Switzerland but operated by a German company that focuses on offering one-click downloads and uploads.  When you upload to RapidShare, you are given a URL which you can share.  No content can be found via searching RapidShare itself, all downloads must be given out by those who uploaded them in the first place.

What are the pros of RapidShare?

RapidShare requires free users to wait anywhere from half a minute to 134 seconds between downloads, but this also depends on the file size and where it is hosted.  Most free users get a maximum of 250 kb/s download speed, depending on the server where the file is located and how many files are being stored there.  Each new download for free users has a 15 minute wait time, and files can be inaccessible at times due to server loads.  If you are lucky, you might be able to take advantage of RapidShare during slow periods during the day but until you figure out when those times are, you might find yourself waiting a long time to download a single file.

What are the cons of RapidShare?

If you are a free user utilizing RapidShare, you might as well steer clear.  While the wait time might not seem bad, and the connection speed not as slow as others, RapidShare shafts those who are not paid account holders.  Since paid users get more allotment than free ones, the latter are often forced to wait longer than 15 minutes or even find certain files completely unavailable to them for long periods of time.  In other cases, download speeds, simultaneously downloads and interruptions can only be taken advantage of by RapidShare paid account holders.  Without a paid account, it can take weeks, if not months, to download a set of files, folders and more from RapidShare.

MegaUpload

What is Megaupload?

Megaupload was launched in 2005 as a file hosting service for uploading and downloading large files.  MegaVideo also offers those uploads to be viewed on the web site as opposed to being downloaded.  Megaupload also has a sister site, MegaPorn, which hosts porn for those of legal age to view it.  Megaupload offers three types of accounts: Free, Premium and Lifetime Platinum.  Free accounts have the most limited use of the site, while Premium and Lifetime Platinum offer full access to uploading and downloading services for a fee.

How does Megaupload work

For free users, Megaupload offers a limited use of uploading and downloading of files.  This means that without registering or registering without purchasing a Premium or Lifetime Platinum account, users have a limited use of the site.  Download, uploads and more are limited with longer wait times and a cap on how much can be downloaded per day.  For uploading, registered users only have 200 GB of storage space to work with while paid account holders have an unlimited amount of storage space.  Registered members have no wait time between downloads and can download an unlimited number of files at a given time.  However, download speeds are limited and it can take some time to download files without paying for a Premium account.

What can you do with Megaupload?

Megaupload allows users to upload large files and share them with others.  As long as these files are legally shareable, Megaupload can be a reliable place to share files.  You simply upload, then share the URL.  You can password protect files to keep them secure, and you can upload any type of file to Megaupload's servers.  Files such as music, movies, documents, RAR and Zip files are just some of the uploads you can use Megaupload for.  Megaupload also allows for you to organize files by name, folders and more.  You have complete control over how your files and folders are shared over the Internet.

MediaFire

What is MediaFire?

MediaFire has been around since 2006 and serves as one of the smaller file hosting services. MediaFire offers unlimited storage space for users, hosting files up to 200 MB in size for free accounts. Pro accounts, once registered and paid for, allow for an upload of 10 GB per file. The site utilizes ads on all downloads which allow it to offer such services to users who have registered an account, have a Pro account or even just upload a file anonymously. MediaFire uses short links to share files, and you can either embed these, password them or just share a link with users.

What are the pros of MediaFire?

The biggest benefit of MediaFire is that there is no wait limit, and you can download as many files as you want. This makes downloading even large files a bit easier if you have the time to do it. MediaFire Pro accounts are relatively inexpensive and offer a 10 GB maximum upload which is larger than most other filesharing web sites on the Internet. These Pro accounts were introduced in August of 2008, they also allow users to take advantage of ZIP, RAR and remote uploads from your computer. MediaFire is one of the most reliable forms of filesharing on the web.

What are the cons of MediaFire?

Since there are no wait times to download files, users may experience a higher rate of unavailable files depending on which server is hosting the files you want to download. This happens frequently and can cause frustration for folks trying to combine a large number of files due to the 200 MB upload limit for free and registered accounts. Since you can only upload files in 200 MB bits or less, you may have to provide multiple download links to users wanting an overall larger file. This can be cumbersome and run into problems if the download times out. MediaFire, overall, has more pros than cons and can be counted on to share files, folders and more.
