Rapid Share

What is RapidShare?

RapidShare is a filesharing service that offers free and paid services.  RapidShare is also one of the most popular file hosting services on the Internet, ranking as the 16th most frequented web site according to Alexa.  The web site is hosted in Switzerland but operated by a German company that focuses on offering one-click downloads and uploads.  When you upload to RapidShare, you are given a URL which you can share.  No content can be found via searching RapidShare itself, all downloads must be given out by those who uploaded them in the first place.

What are the pros of RapidShare?

RapidShare requires free users to wait anywhere from half a minute to 134 seconds between downloads, but this also depends on the file size and where it is hosted.  Most free users get a maximum of 250 kb/s download speed, depending on the server where the file is located and how many files are being stored there.  Each new download for free users has a 15 minute wait time, and files can be inaccessible at times due to server loads.  If you are lucky, you might be able to take advantage of RapidShare during slow periods during the day but until you figure out when those times are, you might find yourself waiting a long time to download a single file.

What are the cons of RapidShare?

If you are a free user utilizing RapidShare, you might as well steer clear.  While the wait time might not seem bad, and the connection speed not as slow as others, RapidShare shafts those who are not paid account holders.  Since paid users get more allotment than free ones, the latter are often forced to wait longer than 15 minutes or even find certain files completely unavailable to them for long periods of time.  In other cases, download speeds, simultaneously downloads and interruptions can only be taken advantage of by RapidShare paid account holders.  Without a paid account, it can take weeks, if not months, to download a set of files, folders and more from RapidShare.
